Zinaida was born in 1975 in Kyiv; graduated from National Academy of Arts of Ukraine (Bachelor of Art History, 2017) and Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (Bachelor of Psychology, 2009). Member of National Artists Union of Ukraine (since 2014).

She has participated in the 1st International Kyiv Biennale of Contemporary Arts (2012), the International Forum of Contemporary Art – Art Kyiv Contemporary (2010, 2012, 2013), the interdisciplinary international festival GOGOLFEST (2013), the parallel program of the Venice Biennale (2015), and has shown her work extensively in the Ukraine.

Her works can be found in the private collections in Ukraine, Great Britain, Spain and USA and in the public collection: Fondacion Caja de Burgos (Spain), Museum of Cosmonautic named after S.P. Korolyov of Zhitomir (Ukraine).

She currently lives and works in Kyiv, Ukraine.

In her art, Zinaida focuses on images and myths surrounding women's issues and the female identity in both Ukrainian and world culture. The artist appeals to sociocultural universals and archetypes traditionally associated with the theme of "women," while working at the intersection of contrasting genres in modern art (such as performance, installation, sculpture and video) and related practices (like set design, music, cinema and theater). Zinaida aptly balances her work at the juncture of historical symbolism and modernity. She uses traditional imagery, rituals and crafts to convey meanings that are relevant to a vibrant and fluid culture. Before embarking on her projects, the artist conducts in-depth cultural and ethnographic research, and meets and communicates with the bearers of archaic forms of knowledge and practices, rooting her work in the depth of human experience over generations.

Another principal theme in Zinaida's work is the problem of time, aging and memory, which are closely intertwined with the motifs of symbolic resurrection and rebirth. A poetic perception of time is reflected in her meditative installations, ascetic video projects, music and sound performances, and sculptural creations.

Artist's Statement
Life in harmony with nature, cultural tradition and the contemporary perspective of humanity are the focus of my work and these themes that my art explores and challenges.

At the core of these is the woman and her identity. The source of life, and an under-stated center of power in our terrestirial and etheral lives, femininity is a core motif that runs through my creative process and is revealed in my work.

Ethnographic exploration is another key, sub-theme that informs my work. The principle elements of birth, initiation and death throughout the ages serves as a drum-beat to the journey of our lives. These traditions are carried through time by femininity, as female energy is the foundation of everything and that which gives rise to stillness and storm, to life and death and to peace and war.

Six female giants in art have lit my own path of expression. These include Georgia O'Keefe, through her dedication to the the body of her work that combines erotica and beauty, as well as death and life. Shirin Neshat is another, what impresses me about her work is the drama of the woman, her strength and fragility, and the sharpness of her focus on the political and the spiritual. Like a metronome, there is Agnes Martin, whose mathematical precision inspires me. In Louise Bourgeois there is attraction and horror. And importantly to me, Marina Abramovic, whose performance art combines sexuality, energy and audacity. And rounding these inspirations out is Annette Messager, with her astonishing femininity, aesthetic of emotions and sensuality of the mind.

Contemporary society is always in the background of my creations. But for me, as an artist, the primary source is most vitally an internal one. The artist cannot possibly reflect on all of the world's problems around her if she is immersed in what she is doing, and believes in it uncomprimisingly, then her work becomes universal.

In my art, I see and contemplate the basic foundations of human culture, emotions and intellect, the boundaries of being and non-being. I transform them through the archaic and the primal origin, and, at the same time, the traditions of modern art and the possibilities of space and time.
